This book is part of a collection of stories written and told by Dr. William J. Faulkner in the tradition of African American trickster tales. Faulkner, a folklorist, wrote that "many of the animal stories of Black Americans were clever denunciations of the brutal slave system."
Faulkner received his doctorate from the Chicago Theological Seminary. He traveled throughout the country well into his eighties, telling stories and speaking about folklore to children, college students, and adults.
